Lot 43
A remarkable Worcester cylindrical mug circa 1760-65

£ 5,000 - 7,000
US$ 6,800 - 9,500
A remarkable Worcester cylindrical mug
circa 1760-65
Of slightly spreading, cylindrical shape with a grooved loop handle, painted on the front with a spirited group of three Fancy Birds in a foliate landscape vignette, one other bird and a butterfly in flight overhead, four simple flower sprays in a pale palette painted beside the handle, 14.8cm (5 7/8in) high

Footnotes

  • This very individual bird painting is rarely seen on Worcester porcelain. A smaller mug by the same hand was in the F Severne Mackenna collection, illustrated in his book (1950), fig. 65. Related painting is seen on two slightly earlier bell shaped mugs illustrated by H Rissik Marshall (1954), pl. 31, fig. 674 and by Franklin Barrett (1966), pl. 10c. The compositions resemble some enamelling found on white glass probably made in Staffordshire.
