Footnotes

  • Provenance: sold in these rooms, Phillips 4 December 1991, lot 392, and illustrated by John Sandon (1993), p.144, col. pl. 38. Only two other related teapots are recorded, both of larger size. One of these is in the Klepser collection, illustrated by Simon Spero (1984), col. pl. 13, fig. 37. The other, lacking its lid, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and is illustrated by H Rissik Marshall (1954), pl. 54, fig. 1102. In each case the decoration appears to be slightly later in date than the shape, and it is possible an early mould was re-issued, even though no surviving examples of either shape are known dating from the earlier 1750s. In his Klepser collection catalogue, Simon Spero suggests that the enamelling might be the work of an outside decorator. The palette is certainly uncharacteristic.
