Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Collection of the Marchesi Nasalli Rocca d'Affini d'Acceglio and thence by family descent to the present owners

Very little is known of the life of Giovan Francesco Surghi. He has been described in contemporary documents as an excellent artist 'in paesi, in fogliami, in prospettive e architettura but very little of his figurative work remains. He is recorded as a pupil of Dosso Dossi and as his collaborator on the estense palaces. The broad shouldered figures at the foot of the Cross, together with the more sketchy figures in the background, are most reminiscent of those in Dossi's early works, such as the Lamentation over the Body of Christ in the National Gallery, London.
