Footnotes

  • The present composition relates to another version, with variations among the still life and figures, painted by the artist in 1639, which is in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (44.4 x 62 cm.).

After his initial training together with Jan Cossiers, who is thought to have been a fellow apprentice, in the studio of Cornelis de Vos from 1615, Simon de Vos became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. In 1626 he married Catharina, a sister of the painter Adriaen van Utrecht, and between 1629 and 1642 is recorded as having taken pupils into his studio in Antwerp, including Jan van Kessel I, and Kaspar Jacob van Ospatal I. De Vos's early career was devoted to the production of cabinet pictures depicting group portraits and merry companies, of which the present painting is a perfect example. These early works inspired by Theodore Rombouts also show the influence of Jan Cossiers.
