Footnotes

  • A RARE AND FINE COMPLETE COPY OF "THE BEST KNOWN OF THE EARLY FRENCH PHOTOGRAPHICALLY ILLUSTRATED PUBLICATIONS."

Maxime Du Camp (1822-1894), French writer and journalist, learned the art of calotyping from Gustave Le Gray. In 1849 he travelled, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, to the Near East. Accompanied by the novelist Gustave Flaubert, he spent a year and a half photographing the sites.

On his return a selection of 125 photographs, from a total of 220 taken, were published by Gide and Baudry of Paris, priced at 500 francs a copy. The photographs were printed at Louis-Désiré Blanquart-Evrard's Imprimerie Photographique, in Lille.

Blanquart-Evrard had published the calotype procedure for the first time in France in 1847, after studying Fox Talbot's work. By 1850 he had developed the albumen paper print process, a new techniques which sped up the printing of photographs, and enabled the publication of works like that of Du Camp.
