Lot 158
BRONTË (CHARLOTTE)

Sold for £ 132 (US$ 181) inc. premium
BRONTË (CHARLOTTE)
Three classical profiles, drawn in pencil, attributed to Charlotte Brontë; with a note on the reverse by John Rooker Junior, stating he had bought it from Mr Riley of Ilkley on 9 August 1894 and that he "in 1886" had bought it "with many other things" from Martha Brown "living then at Saltaire", and that Riley "stated that Martha declared it was C.B's first"; docketed in a different hand in pencil "Charlotte's 1st", on an oblong folio sheet of buff limp card, section removed at lower left, 190 x 275mm.

Footnotes

  • Martha Brown had indeed moved (as the note states) from Haworth to Saltaire in 1868 and, while she held a large collection of Bronteana, was reluctant to sell anything, her collection being gradually dispersed only after her death. It is clear that Mr Riley did not buy the drawing directly from her (as stated) in 1886, since she had died in 1880; but this is at least consistent with what is known as to the posthumous dispersion of her collection, even though it is clearly not the drawing of a young child.
