A market place, Spain signed with monogram l.r. watercolour 55 x 36.5 cm. (21 3/4 x 14 1/4 in.)
Footnotes
Birket Foster made several visits to the continent; in 1852, 1853 and 1861, he travelled around Europe and in 1866 he went abroad again. Foster had a particular fondness for Italy which he visited on several occasions late in his life and he also loved the colours, vivacity and warmth of Spain.
Foster made a sketch book of his travels in Spain where he visited Seville, Madrid, Toledo and Granada among other places. He was drawn to market scenes; enjoying the interchange between the everyday people, their style of dressing and the hot vibrant colours of the fruits and flowers they were selling. In the present work he delights in painting the richly dressed local women fanning themselves exotically in the sun and bantering with the young Spanish boy. The basket of oranges and potted plant are painted with meticulous attention and precision.
A watercolour entitled 'Market at Seville' was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1894.
