Helen Allingham's watercolours of buildings near Salisbury date from the early years of the twentieth century. It was following the disappointing response to her Venetian paintings that the artist ventured out to the Wiltshire countryside. The resulting pictures contained every element the art dealers wanted: a thatched cottages a garden full of traditional flowers and a young girl at the gate. These were the type of scenes Allingham was traditionally associated with and they continued to sell steadily up until the First World War.

Mrs Allingham's ability to paint buildings so faithfully make her watercolours more than just decorative objects; they can be relied upon to be an accurate record of the subject at the time of painting. Since there are so few photographs showing buildings around Downton a century ago, many of the cottages in her paintings have changed beyond recognition or else they have disappeared without trace. Wick cottage, as the building in the present work was called, appeared in at least one other watercolour. The building survived until the 1960's when it caught fire and burnt down. The site is now occupied by a modern house.
