Footnotes

  • Zorensky Catalogue, fig. 66. Provenance: the A.J.King collection, sold Sotheby's 29 June 1965, lot 194, and subsequently from a private collection, sold in these rooms 12 June 1985, lot 183. A matching mug is also recorded, illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain, pl. 36, fig. 780. The arms were used by Charles Cocks who was created Lord Somers, Baron of Evesham in 1697. This jug was probably made for his grandson, Joseph Cocks Esq (1733-1775) and in particular for his marriage in 1758 to Mary Thorniloe. Mary was the daughter of John Thorniloe, one of the original partners in the Worcester Porcelain Manufactory. It is likely that Thorniloe had this jug made as an appropriate wedding gift to his new son-in-law. The prominent thorny rose, painted on the front of this jug and on the mug, may be a rebus used by the Thorniloe family.
