Footnotes

  • This TR3A was first registered in the West Country (‘YD’ is a Somerset mark) and purchased by the present owner on the 1st July 1995 from a TR Register member in the North of England. It is one of only 1,896 TR3As produced for the home market (56,340 were made for export) and is thus comparatively rare. While in present ownership the car has been completely rebuilt, mechanical work being undertaken by Enginuity, a Triumph TR Specialist in London, while the chassis and body were restored by a bodyshop in Italy. Originally of 1,991cc, the engine was rebuilt to the 2,138cc capacity of the later four-cylinder TRs. Zeroed at the time of rebuild, the odometer had ‘clocked up’ 58,539 miles when the speedometer was replaced recently (verified by the last MoT certificate).
The opportunity was taken to upgrade the TR3’s specification in key areas, including replacing the radiator and fitting a fan cooling system to prevent overheating in slow-moving city traffic. The electrical system was changed to negative earth and all wiring replaced. There is a modern radio/cassette stereo system (installed without modifying the basic structure and easily removed without trace) with two concealed loudspeakers, while the radio has a front input enabling the connection of MP3 players, as well as a concealed triple 12V power supply to connect iPod, mobile phone, etc. Sound/heat insulating panels were fitted inside the cockpit and a reconditioned heating system installed. The interior leather trim was renewed, the seats reconditioned and the carpeting (boot included) completely replaced. A new battery was fitted in January 2006.
For a few years the Triumph resided in Italy (where the vendor was working) before returning to England where it was reregistered (with its original mark) in February 2006. The vendor reports that the car performs well on unleaded petrol (with additive) and is reliable and cheap to run, being road tax exempt and inexpensive to insure. Finished in black with matching interior and equipped with the desirable overdrive gearbox, ‘949 FYD’ is offered with current road fund licence, MoT to July 2007 and Swansea V5 registration document.
