Footnotes

  • Although only twelve were built, Lola’s T600 was the first of an extensive category of FIA Class C/IMSA GTP cars that followed. A ‘ground effects’ design constructed around an aluminium honeycomb monocoque body tub, the low-slung T600 dwarfed much of the opposition, being 15’ 6” long and 6’ 6” wide. Of those twelve, chassis ‘T600 HU3’, completed on 28th March 1981, was the only example built with a Cosworth V8 four-cam race engine, cars intended for customers being designed to take the Chevrolet pushrod V8, which delivered close to 600bhp. The only one retained by the factory as a works car, ‘T600 HU3’ was entered by Grid Racing on Lola’s behalf throughout the 1981 FIA Championship season and driven by Guy Edwards and Emilio Villota. For a brief period of time the works Lola was the car to beat, winning the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch and the Enna 6 Hours in Italy, and leading the Martini Trophy at Silverstone until it ran out of fuel. Being one of the first true Formula 1-inspired ‘ground effects’ sports prototypes, its successes triggered a revolution in racing sports car design. The customer cars enjoyed their moments of glory too, the Cooke-Woods Racing-entered T600 driven by Brian Redman and Eppie Wietzes finishing 2nd in the 1981 IMSA GTP series’ Mosport 1000kms race, while as late as 1984 Tony Adamowicz and John Morton, driving for Phil Conte’s Conte Racing Team, finished 4th at the Riverside 6 Hours and 12th at Sebring.
According to information supplied by Lola Heritage, ‘T600 HU2’ was sold to Cooke-Woods Racing via Carl Haas on 10th April 1981 and entered in that year’s Le Mans 24 Hours race fitted with Porsche turbo engine, but failed to qualify. Paperwork on file suggests that Peter Kaus acquired the car in July 1986 from a Mr Steven Wiencek of Wiencek Motorsports, California, USA who in turn had acquired it from Mr Ralph Cooke. In an advertisement dated March 1985, the car was described as ‘Chassis no. 2, complete rebuild by John Bright in October 1984 – 100% race ready’. The car has been on display for many years and appears complete, although its present condition is unknown.
