Footnotes

  • Building four-cylinder cars only from 1910, John North Willys’ revitalised Overland company went from strength to strength, production increasing steadily until by the start of WWI only Ford could claim a higher output. Willys even had the temerity to introduce a direct competitor to Ford’s Model T, but by the time the Overland Model 4 arrived in time for the 1920 season, its $945 price tag (more than double that of the equivalent Model T) placed it in an entirely different market sector. The 2,346cc (27hp) four-cylinder engine and 100” wheelbase were retained when the 4’s designation changed to Model 91 for 1923, when a larger, 106”-wheelbase Model 92 was introduced together with a 2,523cc (30hp) engine which would appear to have been available in both models.
This right-hand drive, 30hp Overland was manufactured in the USA and exported to New Zealand, from whence it was imported into the UK in 2004 and acquired by the lady vendor. There is a plate on the dashboard stating ‘Gray’s Motor Corporation Detroit’, presumably the supplying agent, and the car has the optional Bosch magneto fitted. Since its arrival in this country the Overland has been re-prayed; the leather interior re-trimmed and the electrical system checked, bills for which are included. Although described in the V5 registration document as a saloon, the car is a tourer, though with fixed, non-folding hood. The accompanying parts list clearly shows the hood frame, and with the assistance of the illustration it should be relatively easy to remanufacture the folding mechanism. All mechanical elements are reported as in good working order and the vehicle is supplied with a recently expired MoT, Swansea V5 and SORN. Also included in the sale are reprints of two maintenance manuals and a parts list, each of which bears the logo ‘Willys Overland Club Victoria’.
