Footnotes

  • Although the Anderson family of Kelso is first recorded in the accompanying duplicate logbook issued in 1946, this exceptionally well preserved and outstandingly original Humber 12/25 tourer was first registered on 24th February 1926 by supplying agents, the Scottish Auto Company, Glasgow, passing via their sub agent, R Fish, Maxwellheugh, Kelso to Mr Anderson senior. The car remained in his ownership for the rest of his life before passing to his son, who continued enthusiastically to maintain it. Accompanying documentation includes the aforementioned buff logbook, Swansea V5 and V5C documents, while expired tax discs confirm that the Humber was licensed from 1929 through to 1951 with the exception of 1931, ’42 and ’43.
There is a photograph on file of Mr Anderson junior driving the Humber in July 1968 when it was being used for the filming of a street scene in Henderson Row, Edinburgh for the film ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’, starring Dame Maggie Smith. It appears that shortly afterwards the car underwent extensive refurbishment, although it still retains its original trim and rear Auster screen. The Humber then embarked on a succession of shows and rallies throughout Scotland, including Glamis Castle. A list of these for the period August 1972 to July 1979 is included, recording no fewer than 48 1st class concours and other awards, a quite exceptional achievement. Three trophies for 1st class awards at events in 1974, 1977 and 1979 are included in the sale. Expired MoT certificates record the mileage in 1974 as 17,422 and that in 1979 as 23,007. From that period to date the vehicle has seen very little use.
Mr Anderson died in 1989, since when his son-in-law, a motor engineer employed by supplying agents R Fish of Kelso until they closed 10 years ago, has very carefully stored the vehicle and maintained it in good running order. It remains in excellent condition with only minor deterioration of the paintwork and discoloration of the celluloid side screens, while the original interior is in quite remarkable condition. The under bonnet area is excellent, retaining all original ancillaries as well as the original jack, grease gun, oil can and other small items, together with the original motor horn. When inspected recently, the Humber fired up immediately on the first press of the starter. Nevertheless, a thorough service is advised before the vehicle is returned to regular use.
