1947 Vincent HRD 998cc Rapide Series B
Registration no. JLL 590
Frame no. R2257
Engine no. F10AB/1/258
The British motorcycle industry during the war years saw limited production of machines which were destined mainly for use by the forces. Vincent were quick to regroup following the end of hostilities and the A Series twins had already made a significant impact on the market in pre-war years. The post-war Series B Rapide followed closely in the same idiom, an iconic V-twin in a class of its own for performance and handling. A significant proportion of production found its way to the export market in line with then government policy. JLL 590, an early production model, was first registered in London on 20th October 1947. Its full history is not known but restoration was carried out a number of years ago by a dyed-in-the-wool Vincent enthusiast whose interest had been fired by his father’s employment with a local Vincent dealer. The bike was restored to be part of a small private collection of superior motorcycles and no stone was left unturned during that restoration. This machine has been fitted with Girdraulic forks which significantly enhance its handling and the restoration also incorporated the fitting of a Black Shadow type speedometer. JLL 590 was acquired by the present enthusiast and engineer owner some six years ago. Copies of invoices for work undertaken during the current ownership to maintain the machine to the highest possible standards are on file. It has been ridden sparingly with use restricted to fine days where possible to ensure preservation of cosmetic presentation to the highest standards. Recent work has included the fitting of a new clutch plate and a BTH magneto and the bike is offered with a new battery. It comes with a file containing useful Vincent literature and details of parts suppliers, old MoT certificates reflecting minimal use in the last six years, a copy of an original sales brochure, a Vincent Rider’s Handbook and a Vincent Repair Manual by Richardson. The machine is Swansea registered and is offered with V5 and V5C registration documents, current road fund licence and long MoT valid to 24th June 2007. Also offered with this machine is a tailored petrol tank cover.
