Footnotes

  • Top of the range Wolseley in 1937 was the Super Six 25, a powerful and smooth six-cylinder car, displacing 3,485cc and rated at 25.01hp The four-speed gearbox had synchromesh on second, third and top gears from October 1937, twin SU carburettors fuelled the powerful engine while semi-elliptic suspension and Luvax hydraulic shock absorbers provided superlative ride comfort The Wolseley was indeed a high quality car with such features as Jackall permanent jacks, rear seat foot rests and picnic tables being standard features in their top of the range models. The most attractive two-door drophead coupé version, with its wind-up side windows and snug hood, twin auxiliary driving lamps and external trumpet horns, had the overall appearance and style of many significantly more expensive contemporaries.
This very special example, the Prototype model of the Series III Super Six, has a most distinguished history. At Christmas in 1937 this car was presented by the employees of Wolseley Motors Ltd to William Morris (by then Lord Nuffield)as detailed on a period plaque on the dash board. Each employee of the company had subscribed sixpence towards the £500 cost of the car, an indication of the esteem in which Morris was held This top specification model, having been specially prepared for ‘the boss’, would actually have cost closer to £2,000. The car remained in Lord Nuffield’s ownership until 1964 when it was given by his estate to the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu where it was displayed in the main hall until a change of policy saw it sold at Bonhams’ Beaulieu auction on 13th September 2003 (Lot 335) when it was acquired by the vendor. The latter advises us that he has only had to replace the hood and the original(!) tyres, and rebuild the gearbox which had been dismantled. Now re-commissioned for the road, this historic car is offered with sundry invoices, current road fund licence, MoT to April 2007 and Swansea V5 registration document.
