Footnotes

  • During the mid-1960s the British Elva Mark VIIS rear-engined sports-racing car built a terrific reputation for itself within the medium-capacity road racing classes, most often using BMW 4-cylinder engines, but also making great use of Lotus-Ford twin-cam 4-cylinder power units such as that installed in this particularly attractive example offered here.

This Elva-Ford Mark VIIS is understood to have been part of the Peter Kaus Rosso Bianco Collection for many years. As such it has been preserved on long-term display within the Collection’s museum halls at Aschaffenburg, and it has been put to very little use of which we are aware.

These strikingly attractive and extremely potent ‘knife-edge nosed’ Elvas were perhaps the finest of all Elva constructor Frank Nicholls’ sports-racing car designs, and they made terrific impact in the mid-1960s with their compact, powerful and extremely torquey production-based BMW 4-cylinder engines, developed for them by specialist tuner Frank Webb. British racing driver Tony Lanfranchi was particularly successful with his Elva works-backed example, while other Mark VIIS cars were fitted most notably with Porsche flat-4 cylinder racing engines, in addition to the Lotus-Ford twin-cam unit as presented in this very well preserved and attractive car. Swiss star driver Herbie Muller finished second in both the 1964 and 1965 European Mountain Championship series behind the wheel of an Elva-Porsche Mark VII. The Elva company, of course, subsequently became a subsidiary of the Trojan Group, and the name was adopted for the early production McLaren-Elva Group 7 and CanAm sports-racing cars through 1965-66.
