Footnotes

  • When the 5.3-litre V12-engined version of Jaguar’s XJ6 arrived in 1972, it elevated this already outstanding car to an altogether higher plain, combining superlative high performance - its top speed was more than 145mph - with a level of luxury unmatched by many a less accommodating grand tourer costing several times as much. Harking back to the marque’s flagship model of the 1920s, the name ‘Double-Six’ was chosen for the top-of-the-range Daimler equivalent that incorporated just about every conceivable ‘extra’ as standard. A longer-wheelbase alternative was introduced in August 1972, becoming the standard model when the XJ family was up-graded to Series II specification the following year. In 1977 Car magazine comparison-tested the ultimate, Vanden Plas version of the Double-Six alongside a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II, Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 and Cadillac Seville, concluding that, even in such exalted company, the cheaper Daimler was the better car.
This Double-Six Vanden Plas is finished in the coral metallic livery unique to that model. The car has covered 96,000 miles from new and comes with a substantial history file of old MoTs, service invoices, etc. It is offered current road fund licence, Swansea V5 registration document and fresh MoT. No reserve.
