1911 Napier 15hp ‘Colonial’ Model 5/7-Seat Tourer
Registration no. SV 6604
Chassis no. 10608
Engine no. 17996
Developed from an earlier 15hp model launched in 1907 as a more affordable foil to the huge six-cylinder models that had established Napier’s reputation in the luxury car trade, the 15hp Napier introduced at Olympia in 1910 was the company’s most successful model. ‘A sturdy car without frills’, it cost £350 in chassis form, to which Napier’s own four-seater bodywork added an extra £80 (plus an extra £7 for the windscreen). Autocar bought a 15hp Napier as a staff car at the end of 1910 and straightaway took it on a 1,700-mile tour of France, which it completed without the slightest mechanical bother, only needing minor adjustments of the brakes. Commented the magazine at the end of the gruelling test: ‘The engine is quieter, pulls better and is more flexible than the day it left the works’.
Superbly restored by a previous owner in Ireland, this 1911 car competed in many events under his ownership, including The Gordon Bennett Rally. Magnificently finished in Napier’s traditional green livery, the coachwork is upholstered in black leather and the car is fully equipped with brass lighting, acetylene headlamps and oil side lamps, folding windscreen, hood and spare detachable wheel. The 2.9-litre four-cylinder engine gives the car a good turn of speed, while the five-person seating, with additional occasional accommodation for a further two passengers, makes it supremely practical as family transportation. The current enthusiast owner purchased the car at Brooks’ Sale at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu on 23rd July 1998. While in his care it has taken part in selected suitable events and has continued to be well maintained.
The Napier marque is well respected in Veteran motoring circles and in its day ranked alongside Rolls-Royce, Lanchester and Wolseley in the top echelon of British manufacturers. Its 'Colonial'-specification high ground clearance gives this car an imposing presence and excellent, 'over the hedges' vision for the veteran motor tour. The car is offered with VCC dating certificate, current road fund licence/MoT and Swansea V5 document.
