1969 Lotus 61 Formula Ford 1600 Single Seater
Coachwork by 61/34/FF
Lotus was one of the first major manufacturers of racing cars to embrace the new Formula Ford after its inception in 1967. Intended as a low-cost introduction to ‘proper’ motor racing, Formula Ford required relatively inexpensive cars that were easy for the novice to maintain. In line with these requirements, the Lotus 61 was an entirely conventional design by the standards of the day, being constructed around a multi-tube steel spaceframe with wishbone suspension all round. It was one of a number of Lotus formula car designs of this period to feature wedge-shaped bodywork, an innovation first seen on the Type 56 Indianapolis car.
This Lotus 61 was previously owned and raced by Dieter Streve Mullens, holding the Pre-1971 class lap record at Brands Hatch for a time. Prior to Mullens’ ownership the car had been in Ireland, where it was purchased by Peter Denty who subsequently had it restored. In more recent times the car has been cared for by Martin Stretton Racing, and was acquired two years ago by the current owner who has campaigned it in HSCC Historic Formula Ford events, finishing in the points at Croft more than once. Chassis number ‘61/34/FF’ is offered fresh from a winter engine rebuild carried out by recognised Formula Ford specialists Fowler Goodwin Motorsport, and will have taken part in a solitary test session at Castle Combe and two races at Donington Park by time of sale. The car comes with engine rebuild invoices and a quantity of spares comprising carburettor, long-range fuel tank, spare nose cone and two sets of wheels, one shod with Avons, the other with Dunlops.
