A progressive development of the Mk1 - Jaguars first unitary-construction saloon - the Mk2 debuted in October 1959. Slimmer windscreen pillars and deeper side windows greatly enlarged the Mk2s glass area, while the deletion of its predecessors full-sized rear wheel spats allowed the rear track to be widened, increasing both roll resistance and stability. Otherwise, the running gear remained much the same as before. A redesigned dashboard, with speedometer and rev-counter ahead of the driver and minor gauges grouped in the centre, established Jaguars layout for years to come. Transmission options were either a four-speed manual or Borg-Warner automatic gearbox, and when equipped with the former a 3.4-litre Mk2 was a genuine 120mph car, with the automatic version not far behind. This 3.4-litre Mk2 was sympathetically restored in 1981 by Peter Thurston (Rapide Motors Ltd) of Herne Bay, Kent and comes with relevant invoice for £5,979. Work carried out included extensive bodywork renovation and a bare-metal re-spray. Since completion the vehicle has seen only gentle use in the hands of its loving long-term owner, covering 750-or-so miles in the past 15 years. NWT 69D has been kept in storage in recent times and was re-commissioned for road use in November 2004 by Britannia Motor Engineering of Waltham Cross, Herts, a process that included overhauling the distributor, carburettors and rear brakes at a cost of more than £1,500 (invoice available). Last year a further £5,000 or so was spent fitting chrome wire wheels and new tyres, power steering, new alternators and a stainless steel exhaust system. The vendor reports that the car, still looks great, it really is a pleasure to use. Finished in one of the most attractive colour combinations of gunmetal grey with red leather interior, and equipped with the desirable all-synchromesh manual/overdrive gearbox, the car is supplied with its original full tool kit, owners manual, sundry invoices, MoT and Swansea V5 registration document.
