Footnotes

  • The original Overland car was developed in the early 1900s by the Standard Wheel Company, of Indiana and the fledgling firm had already changed hands once before John Willys, a New York auto dealer and major Overland customer, arrived to rescue it from closure in 1907. Willys secured credit, reorganised the company and by the summer of 1908 was in a position to build a new factory. Building four-cylinder cars only from 1910, the revitalised company went from strength to strength, production increasing steadily until by the start of WWI only Ford could claim a higher output. Sliding-gear transmissions had replaced the previous epicyclic type in 1909, co-incidentally the same year that Ford introduced the Model T that would use the latter form of transmission for the next 17 years! The Model 69 was one of two four-cylinder models, introduced in the autumn of 1912, the other being the larger and more expensive Model 71. Powered by a 4.8-litre engine rated at 25.6hp and producing 30bhp, the 69 was a brief inclusion in the Overland range, being replaced for 1914 by the Model 79.
This Model 69R two-seat roadster has right-hand drive, as did all Overlands built before 1915, and the three-speeds-plus-reverse gearbox. The car was imported into the UK by the vendor from Phoenix, Arizona, USA in August 1990. Since its arrival in this country the Overland has formed part of the vendor’s private collection of vintage cars, being maintained in first class order and used for local shows and other classic vehicle events. We are advised that the car benefits from new timing gears, oil pump gear and an engine bottom-end rebuild in addition to a repaint undertaken in October 2004. Oversize aluminium pistons (increasing engine capacity to 5,226cc) and detachable rear wheel rims are the only listed departures from standard. Finished in blue with black wings and matching buttoned upholstery, the vehicle is offered with MoT to October 2006, road fund licence to September 2006 and Swansea V5 document.
