Footnotes

  • Powered by Norton and JAP motorcycle engines, Cooper’s innovative rear-engined racing cars dominated the 500cc Formula 3 scene in the 1950s, providing many future stars, most notably Stirling Moss, with their first taste of ‘real’ motor racing. For the contemporary Formula 2 however, Cooper produced a conventional front-engined car powered by Bristol’s 2-litre, cross-pushrod six, a unit derived from that of the pre-war BMW 328. Introduced in 1952, the first of these - the T20, with box-section chassis – provided rising star Mike Hawthorn with the means to challenge the dominant Ferraris. The T20 was replaced for the following season by the spaceframe T23, otherwise known as the Cooper-Bristol MkII. Today these popular Cooper-Bristols are among the most useable and practical of front-engined historic racing cars.
This Cooper-Bristol MkII was built up from parts and completed in 1988 with the approval of the VSCC as a 1954-type car eligible for Group 4. Accompanying VSCC eligibility documents record that parts used originated from Cooper-Bristol guru Roddy Macpherson and drivers Bob Gerard and Horace Gould. Since acquisition by the vendor in February 1998, the car has been expertly maintained by recognised Cooper-Bristol specialist Tony Byford (Racing Car Restorations). Major works carried out/parts fitted include an engine rebuild; gearbox and clutch rebuild; renewal of all suspension wishbones, pivots, shock absorbers and rear spring; rear axle overhaul and new cwp; new fuel lines, pumps and regulators; installation of a remote gear lever assembly; and new exhaust system. A large history file containing numerous related invoices accompanies the car.
Offered in race-ready condition, this car has competed regularly in VSCC and other historic meetings since completion, and in 2000 achieved its greatest success with the current owner driving, winning the Post-War Historic Racing Car class at Prescott hill climb.
