Footnotes

  • In the mid-1920s, the French company Porthault was the first to print patterns on bed and table linens. (Before then, only white was available.) Porthault almost immediately became the de rigueur brand for the high society set around the world, appealing to buyers such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In the early 1960s, Porthault reached its zenith of popularity in the United States when it was reported that it was Jackie Kennedy's favorite brand. Capote purchased this set in Paris.
