BARTON, CLARA. 1821-1912.
Autograph Letter Signed (“Clara Barton”), 4 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoining leaves), n.p., [March, 1865], to Lt. Col. O.L. Manns regarding the dispersion of her brother’s estate, leaves creased horizontally, some soiling and toning overall.

The “Angel of the Battlefield” and founder of the American Red Cross writes this letter to a Union officer who has offered to help dispose of her brother Stephen’s estate. Stephen Barton was arrested in 1864 and charged with selling supplies to the Confederates. He was imprisoned, and though Clara was able to negotiate his release, he nonetheless died soon after. Barton asks what market value for her brother’s mules and saddle horse might be, and suggests selling his property at auction if a private sale is not possible.
