Footnotes

  • There was a Young Lady of Lucca,
    Whose lovers completely forsook her;
    She ran up a tree,
    And said, "Fiddle-de-dee!"
    Which embarassed the people of Lucca.

    Following the death of his beloved sister Ann in March 1861 and his completion of his first large-scale oil Cedars in May, Lear decided to visit Florence to paint two views of the City for Lady Waldegrave. Lucca is north-west of Florence and would have been only a three hour journey from the city for Lear. In the present lot Lear has depicted the Aqueduct of Lucca, constructed between 1823 and 1832 by Lorenzo Nottolini stretching from the right into the town of Lucca in the centre.

    The contrast between the jovial limerick and the austerity of the painting is stark and highlights the vast gulf between Lear the landscape painter and Lear the comic poet.
