Footnotes

  • Thomas Johnson 1714-c.1778 was described in Mortimer's Universal Director, 1763 as 'Carver, Teacher of Drawings and Modelling and Author of a Book of Designs for Chimney Pieces and other ornaments, and of several other Pieces'. In 1755 he issued a group of designs entitled Twelve Girandoles, which have similar features expressed in the design for this pair of girandoles. Interestingly some of Johnson's designs were republished in 1834 in Chippendale's designs for sconces, where some of the designs had Johnson's name erased and Chippendale's inserted.
