Footnotes

  • Although not especially large in size, Dover has long been one of the most important towns in the country because of its strategic location as the ‘Gateway of England’. The northern terminus for the shortest sea-crossing to the Continent, its harbour facilities have been continually improved over the centuries until the advent of steamships, closely followed by railways, in the early nineteenth century marked the start of the period of its greatest expansion. When the railway connecting Dover with London opened on 7th February 1844, a new era in the carriage of mail and passengers was ushered in. For the first time, ships’ movements could be co-ordinated with onward journeys to the capital and the result was an improvement in transportation and communication of epic proportions. Despite the Dover Straits’ reputation for contrary winds and tides however, this particular view shows the harbour in a quieter vein, with a typical cross-Channel steamer of the period tied up at the quayside awaiting her passengers.
