Footnotes

  • The ruins of the Cistercian abbey at Villers-la-Ville were a popular motif for artists in the 19th century. Kruseman first painted the ruins in 1850, and returned to the subject several times. His depictions of the ruins show a certain licence however, as there are in fact two towers which still stand. The artist appears to have worked from sketches, adjusting the compositions to suit his needs, creating what B.C.Koekkoek referred to as a 'pleasing lie'.

For comparable examples see the artist's catalogue raisonné, cat nos. 59, 67, 68, 70, and 231.
