Footnotes
Provenance: Private Collection.
Wouterus Verschuur was born in Amsterdam, 1812 and learnt to paint at an early age, under the auspices of Pieter Geradus van Os (1776-1839) and Cornelis Steffelaar (1797-1861).
Drawing from the romantic traditions of the 17th Century masters, Verschuur's paintings display a high level of technical accomplishment and inventive composition. He was successful in his own lifetime, as he won a number of prizes, including gold medals at the Felix Meritis Society painting competition, and was a member of the Royal Amsterdam Academy from 1833 and the 'Arti et Amicitiae' from 1839.
Verschuur was closely associated with Cornelis Springer (1817-1891) and Pieter Caspar Christ (1822-1891) and his students include the Hague School painter Anton Mauve (1838-1888) and his own son Wouterus Verschuur Junior (1841-1936), who also specialized in painting horses.
