ALEXANDER II OF RUSSIA
Autograph letter in French to Ekaterina Dolgorouky, expressing his overwhelming physical passion for 'Katia' ("Bonjour mon Ange, je t'aime, je t'aime et suis heureux de t'aimer. J'ai très bien dormi grâce à toi et me suis reveilli sous la bonne impression de notre soirée d'hier"), and the hardship of life at Court without her ("Oh! avec quelle impatience j'attends maintenant le moment de n[ou]s rencontre à la promenade, mais jusque là j'ai encore beaucoup à faire") the letter also conveying, in Russian, the Tsar's more explicit wishes ("would that we could romp wildly together, one on one") eight pages, 8vo, bearing the Imperial cachet froid, numbered '24', S[aint] P[etersburg], 26 January/7 February, 1868

Footnotes

  • ALEXANDER II, TSAR OF RUSSIA, 1818-1881 TO HIS MISTRESS EKATERINA DOLGOROUKY. An affair which lasted until the Tsar's death was to begin when Alexander first saw the eighteen year old Katia in the Summer Garden in 1865. On becoming his mistress a year later, Katia was rapidly acknowledged in Court as the Tsar's lover, an impression confirmed when Alexander installed her close to his chambers in the Winter Palace. Katia bore the Tsar three children, but after the death of the Tsarina in 1880, the 'legitimate' happiness of the couple was shortlived, ceasing when Alexander was assasinated in 1881. The offered correspondence, written at intermittent periods with the date and hour recorded, reveals the intensity of the Tsar's passion for his mistress in the style of a journal.
