An important Elkington & Co., bronze statuette of Harry Vardon
By Hal Ludlow, circa 1904, measuring 26 inches high, signed and dated.
The 'large size' Harry Vardon bronze was advertised with a retail price of just over £26; the small version, 5 inches was sold for 17/6d. Few were cast and those few that were, were generally bought by Golf Clubs as decorative items.
Harry Vardon won the Open Championship six times, a record, from 1896 through 1914, and was second four times. He also won the US Open in 1900.

Footnotes

  • John M. Olman & Morton W. Olman Golf Antiques Page 178: "This bronze of the immortal Harry Vardon is considered to be the pre-eminent example of golf statuary. It was produced by Elkington in 5-, 10-, and 26-inch sizes. Hal Ludlow, the sculptor, was an accomplished amateur golfer. His keen awareness of the golf swing was described by Golf Illustrated when the bronze made its debut in 1904. [Ludlow] has given us Vardon to the life...note the light folds of the Norfolk jacket, the belt loosely buckled at the back, the sleeve-wrists turned back, the tightly-locked thumb. Every trifling characteristic has been observed and fixed in enduring bronze. Vardon himself has expressed his entire satisfaction with the position as a whole."
