The Minute Book of the Dirleton [Archerfield] Golf Club
Footnotes
Played over the land surrounding Archerfield House in Dirleton, East Lothian, it is believed that golf was played here long before an official Golf Club was constituted in 1869. With membership limited to those who had a connection with the estate and its owners, the Nisbet-Hamilton's, Archerfield had a reputation as the most exclusive Golf Club in Scotland during the latter half of the 19th century. Run on democratic grounds, new members were admitted by invitation only and never exceeded more than fifty at any given time. With four meetings held each year, the quality of the competition prizes were also outstanding and included: ‘A full set of Tom Morris Clubs’ along with a ‘finely bound copy of Sir Walter Simpson’s book on Golf…’
Offering a unique insight, Club Chaplain, the Reverend John Kerr, was given access to the minutes for his illuminating chapter on Archerfield Golf Club for his seminal work The Golf Book of East Lothian,. Noting its superb turf and beautiful surroundings, he famously wrote how, ‘No snugger, cosier, more delightful links can be found anywhere, for pure, unalloyed enjoyment of a summers days play than Archerfield...’
Following World War II, Archerfield House and its golf course fell into a state of terminal decline. Dormant for over half a century, this historic estate once again echoes to the sound of ball on club with the development of two world-class Golf Clubs in Archerfield Links and The Archerfield Renaissance Club.
