Footnotes

  • Michael Brown painted twenty-six golf pictures for the Life Association of Scotland from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Eighteen of the twenty-six originals were sold at Sothebys in July 1995, where three of them exceeded £40,000 and five exceeded £30,000. Brown's painting technique was so detailed especially when he had large groups of players in his painting that they were often mistaken as being early photographs! This lot represents a rare opportunity to acquire an original Michael Brown painting.

    Provenance:
The Manager of the London office of the Life Association of Scotland gave this painting to the present owner in 1977. It had been damaged mainly to a small area in the top right quarter during the Blitz. The present owner sought advice in 1996 and had the painting professionally restored.
A set of the correspondence, damage assessment and work carried out can be forwarded to interested parties.
