Sold for £ 7,050 (US$ 9,654) inc. premium
A Lancashire lantern clock, Barnaby Matthews, circa 1700,
5¾-inch chapter ring with starred centre; the twin-weight driven movement with anchor escapement and added motion work for minute hand, in brass case with integral feet and finials to pillars, onion shaped backcock, wrought iron sub-bell strap, and front finial signed Barnaby Matthews Fecit, 13½in 34cm high.

Footnotes

  • Barnaby Matthews is a previously unrecorded member of a small group of Lancashire clockmakers who produced lantern clocks during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Their work is sufficiently stylized to be referred to as a Lancashire "school" of clockmaking by Brian Loomes in a piece for Clocks Magazine in September 2002.
Recognizable idiosyncracies of the school include an iron bell strap fixed beneath the bell, chapter rings rivetted rather than pinned to the dial sheet, and an onion shaped backcock. Lancashire lantern clocks are also generally a little smaller than those from the South of England.
