attributed to Rufus Porter (1792-1884)
first quarter 19th century

Each finely painted figure, the lady wearing a ruffled empire dress, her hair braided and with a hair comb, the gentleman in a blue waistcoat and ruffled shirt.

  • A man of many talents and vast intellectual pursuits, Rufus Porter was at different times a portrait painter, a muralist, a fiddler, an inventor, an author, a publisher (he began the journal Scientific American), a soldier and a sailor. His interests in science and art converged when he built a camera obscura and used the device to aid in the rendering of portraits, advertising “Correct Likenesses in full Colours for two Dollars”.

    Porter miniatures can be found in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg and the White House. The Rufus Porter Museum and Cultural Heritage Center opened in 2005, in Bridgton, Maine.
