A western Balkans flintlock long gun
Montenegro/Herzegovina, 18th or early 19th century
Tapered 36 1/2 inch barrel in .54 caliber smoothbore. Sighting rib. Breech with gold-filled maker's marks comprising rectangular panels with maker's name and a horse, respectively within a group of eleven fleur-de-lys. Italian lock with beveled border, delicately chiseled scrollwork at the tail and cock and signed G. Sofianti-. Five silver capucines chased on the upper halves with scrollwork, the rearmost fitted with a sight. Stock decorated overall with panels of diamond-shaped and triangular mother-of-pearl panels with deckled edges, the interstices set with brass tacks. The larger panels decorated with bullseyes set with red pigment. Wrist retaining green velvet cover piped in silver thread. Silver buttplate chased with scrolls and beaded borders. Complete with original leather-reinforced woven sling.
Condition: Very good. Barrel showing areas of light pitting. Lock with dark patina and not functioning. Stock inlay generally intact but showing some slight losses at barrel tang. Buttstock with chipping at toe of butt and at rear of comb. Buttplate with losses.
