Edo Period, Dated 1680
Cast in a pose of meditation with his hands in dhyanamudra, his monastic robes open at the chest and falling in rhythmic folds over the front of the tall double-lotus pedestal, the faintly smiling face with a pronounced moustache and small curling tuft of a beard below downcast eyes centered by a large urna, a secondary urna at the base of his low ushnisha emerging from a coiffure of small spiral curls, the reverse incised with a long dedicatory inscription in kanbun concerning the casting of the image, dated Enpo 8 (1680) kanoe-saru 12th month, 14th day, and terminating with two lines reading Chu-shishi (Master of[Bronze] Casting) Bushu (Musashi Province) Kanda Nabecho and Fujiwara no ason Ota Kyubeesuke Shogi/Masanori-saku (casting flaws, later application of gilt to face).
