Footnotes

  • Literature:
Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray, John Singer Sargent: Complete Paintings, vol. 3 The Later Portraits, Yale University Press, New Haven 2003, p.60 no. 404.

    Note:
The present work is an oil sketch for a larger portrait of Captain John Edmund Philip Spicer (1850-1928) dated 1901. (Ormond p.59, no. 403). Captain Spicer was High Sheriff of Wiltshire and a captain of the First Life Guards. He was married to Lady Margaret Fane, youngest daughter of the twelfth Earl of Westmorland whom Sargent painted as well.

The finished version shows the Captain as a country gentleman about to go out for a carriage ride. He holds a hat, gloves, and a driving whip in his left hand while his right is partially tucked into his jacket pocket with a colorful red and green handkerchief dangling below. These items are merely hinted at in the sketch, as it is a loose and thinly painted work.

The proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit future acquisitions for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
