Autograph Manuscript Signed of Robert Cooper, in pencil and pen, approx. 71 leaves, 12mo, various places in Tennessee and Mississippi, June, 1863 to January 1864, being a daily pocket diary housed in brown leatherette with tab closure, thumbing and wear throughout, several leaves loose, covers worn. Together with sixth plate ambrotype of Cooper in civilian clothes, housed in thermoplastic case, plus a collection of related papers and ephemera, including an 1863 furlough pass.

Robert Cooper enlisted in Company F of the 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in October of 1861. In early 1864 he was promoted to corporal, and the next year to sergeant. This daily journal covers the second half of 1863, when the 63rd OVI traveled throughout Tennessee and north Mississippi. Cooper keeps a detailed list of the itinerary of Company F’s movement from Memphis to Prospect, TN from October 18 to November 30, 1863: Memphis, Germantown, Layfayette Station, Pocahontas, Corinth, Clear Creek, Benville [?], Eastport, Iuka, across the Tennessee River, Shoal Creek, AL (probably Muscle Shoals), to Prospect. He records commentary along the way: “Drillen in camp … Fust Rebby got shot by the 39th gard.
