ADAMS, JOHN. 1735-1826.
Autograph Letter Signed ("John Adams") as President, 1 p, 4to, Philadelphia, April 7, 1800, to Reverend James Kemp, Rector of Choptank Parish, Maryland, small stain, small repair to centerfold, recipient’s address at lower left corner very slightly shaved, tipped at all edges to album leaf, near fine.

Adams writes in praise of Kemp’s eulogy for George Washington, strongly criticizes Thomas Paine's Age of Reason and states his belief that Christianity will prevail in the U.S. In full: "Sir, I thank you for an ingenious Sermon from a well chosen Text, on the death of my Predecessor which I recd with your Letter of the 26 March and have read with pleasure. / I am happy that my frail endeavors to respect the Religion of my Country have met your approbation. / The detestable pains that have been taken to propagate the Age of Reason and other publications as pernicious in this Country, have not answered their end. The Devisers of Mischief have been disappointed; and as far as my observation has extended the Truth has shown itself great and that it will prevail. I wish you Sir as an able champion for it all the success which you can probably wish for yourself. With much respect I am Sir your obliged and most obedient Servant...."
Provenance: The Presidential Autograph Collection of Alfred L. Baker.
