Engraved title-page, letterpress contents leaf, plus 45 engraved maps hand-colored in outline, the first of which is a large folding general map of the Russian Empire and 43 of which are double-page (map 42 in two sections). Engraved by A.F. Bereznikov, G.I. Kalpakov, G. Kharitonov, G. Meshkov, and I.C. Nabholz. Folio (526 x 344 mm). Period full mottled calf, ruled in blind, spine in compartments with red leather label. Some centerfold creasing to general map, penciled title transcriptions to contents leaf and a few maps, binding with light wear at extremities, spine with some surface wear and upper joint just starting; else fine.

First edition. Fine copy of this splendid and rare atlas of the Russian Empire. Each map bears a large cartouche illustrating scenes emblematic of the region. The general map shows the North American coast with Russian settlements indicated and includes a large inset map of the discoveries of the Russians in North America from explorations in 1784-87. The provincial boundaries here depicted are those delineated in Catherine the Great's local government reform of 1775.
