Footnotes

  • Exhibition catalog: Princely Magnificence, Court Jewels of the Renaissance, 1500-1630, London, 1980, 72.

The blue velvet and the monogram of the Virgin suggest that this hood could either be made for cermonial use on a sculpture of the Virgin, or was intended to be worn for a specific feast of the Virgin. The jewel settings indicate that this is circa 1600. Embellishing textiles with pearls is a Muslim tradition brought to Italy in the 12th century.
