Footnotes

  • San Francisco metalsmith Margaret De Patta (1903-1964) was among the first contemporary studio jewelers. She studied with Lazlo Moholy-Nagy – previously a teacher at the Bauhaus in Berlin - in Chicago in 1941. A proponent of modernism, she experimented with structure, spatial depth, open forms, and light. Her work is beautifully sculptural while also functional. She developed new ways to cut transparent stones and new structural techniques for holding them. Her work is in numerous museum collections, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C., London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California.
