Footnotes

  • This jar belongs to a major group of pharmacy jars that have been attributed to Siena on the basis of their similarity to the decoration of the Petrucci Palace tile pavement. More recently a Deruta origin has also been suggested for this group. Several distinct designs are recorded, suggesting a number of different sets were made. These include a pair of albarelli formerly in the Imbert collection and now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (23.166) which are dated 1515 and are believed to have come from the pharmacy of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. These are painted in the same distinctive palate as the present jar and include an identical band of endless-knots in yellow and black around the base. Similar bands are seen on a pair of albarelli in the Clarke collection and these are discussed by Wendy M Watson, Italian Renaissance Maiolica from the William A Clarke Collection, catalogue no. 25. The base of this jar is incised with symbols, possibly a form of code used in the original pharmacy to denote the weight of the jar when empty.
