early 18th century

Sold for £ 1,800 (US$ 2,237) inc. premium
A rare London (Southwark, Lambeth or Vauxhall) stoneware tavern mug
early 18th century
Of cylindrical type with a grooved loop handle, decorated with white slip, an iron red band around the turned rim, the applied sprig of a lion rampant also coloured red, incised inscription 'James Fidler in L....th', and impressed crowned AR excise mark, 17.2cm high (broken and reconstructed)

Footnotes

  • Exhibited: Browne Muggs, 1985, p. 40, no. 57, where the fact that this is the only example of stoneware known with red colouring is mentioned. See also Oswald, Hildyard and Hughes, 1982, colour plate B. The excise mark for Queen Anne's reign was introduced by many potters on the Queen's succession in 1702, despite the WR mark still being required by law. Although the inscription relates to the Red Lion in Lambeth, the form of the mark can be associated with Vauxhall on the evidence of wasters, op cit p. 279, fig. III, no. 4, and Roy Edwards, 'An Early 18th Century Waste Deposit from the Vauxhall Pottery, EEC Trans, Vol. 12, pt. 1, pl. 48.
