An mid 17th century enamel 'memento mori' slide, circa 1640
The oval plaque with black enamel ground, with central white enamel skull and cross bones between an hour glass and chalice, the reverse with an entwined serpent with central flowerhead, flanked by the letters M M for memento mori and bordered by eternal knot motifs, some enamel damage, diameter 2.70cm.

Footnotes

  • Memento Mori slides were designed to be worn on ribbons either at the neck or on the wrist. They served as an ever present reminder of the wearer’s mortality. The term Memento Mori ‘remember you must die’ was often further reiterated with motifs such as an hourglass or skull and crossbones, as illustrated in lot 104. By the later part of the 17th century memorial jewels contained ciphers or monograms and were made in remembrance of a particular person.
