HOOKE (ROBERT)
Robert Hooke's autograph minutes of the Royal Society, recording experiments conducted as Curator of Experiments and his correspondence as Secretary; the volume comprising Hooke's extracts of minutes between 1661 and 1677 and the original minutes kept by him as Secretary between 1677 and 1682, covering, inter alia, his dealings with Newton prior to the Principia and the hitherto lost minute confirming Leeuwenhoek's observations of micro-organisms; with additional material inserted, including an autograph report by Flamsteed; the manuscript later in the possession of Hooke's posthumous editor William Derham but until now remaining unknown to scholars, upwards of 500 pages, comprising over 100 pages of Hooke's autograph transcripts and nearly 420 pages of his autograph minutes, sewn in gatherings and mounted on stubs (a few out of order), probably by William Derham Jr in the mid eighteenth century (see note in supplementary catalogue), calf-backed grey paper-covered boards, some wear to the binding and dust-staining on outer pages of the minutes from having been filed prior to binding, but overall in fine and sound condition, William Derham Sr's index in two loose gatherings, large 4to, [London, Gresham College], c.1677-1694, containing extracts of minutes from 1661-1677 and original minutes of 1677-1682, together with extracts and original minutes of 1684 and 1691

Footnotes

  • A MANUSCRIPT OF OUTSTANDING IMPORTANCE, ENCAPSULATING THE REVOLUTION IN SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING THAT MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE MODERN WORLD - A RECORD OF THE GREATEST SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTION OF THE AGE, WRITTEN BY ONE OF ITS GREATEST SCIENTISTS. Few memorials of the scientific revolution can have greater resonance: even though Hooke and Newton were to become bitter rivals, it was to Hooke that Newton addressed the famous words "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants". The Hooke Folio - lost for some three hundred years - is a remarkable survival from the heroic age of science. Please see supplementary catalogue for full details.
