  • The principal naturalist on Captain James Cook's second voyage to the South Pacific, Forster collected thousands of specimens with the help of his son Georg. Characteres generum plantarum includes the first scientific descriptions of numerous previously unknown plants from several Pacific Islands and New Zealand, illustrations for which were prepared during the voyage home and published within a few months of Forster's return.
