Footnotes

  • It was the eminent wood engraver Joseph Swain who recognised Helen Paterson's potential as an illustrator, when she was 19 years old. In 1868, he put her to the test and asked her to provide some illustrations to accompany childrens' stories and poems. Her determination to succeed in what was very much a male dominated environment, exceeded Swain's expectations; she also displayed a professional attitude and met deadlines on time. Miss Paterson quickly gained a reputation as a fine figurative illustrator and her work was getting noticed.

In 1870 she was approached by the editor of The Graphic, a newly formed illustrated newspaper, who offered her a job. As the only female member of staff, she was required to provide drawings on wood of events such as flower shows and opening nights at the theatre to be reproduced in the newspaper. She illustrated and Horace Harral engraved Mrs Oliphant's latest novel Innocent- A Tale of Modern Life which was serialised each week from January until June 1873. The present work is a watercolour from which an illustration to Innocent-A Tale of Modern Life was made (see inset). The work appeared in the 25th January issue of The Graphic. Helen Paterson worked at the newspaper until her marriage in 1874. We have not been able to identify the sitter in the present painting but it is probable that she is one of Helen Paterson's friends whom she frequently used as models.
