Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    Private Collection, Arizona

    Literature:
This painting is listed as #200 in Michael Schroeder's catalogue raisonne on the artist's work.

    Note:
In the 1870s Gilbert Munger made several trips out west, first with Clarence King's historic geological exploration of the 40th parallel, and later at his own expense. During these trips, Yosemite Valley became one of Munger's favorite places to paint. His Yosemite works were so well received that Munger became as important a figure in the San Francisco art scene as artists such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill. He also continued to paint versions of his Yosemite paintings while living in London, clearly indicating how much the subject resonated with the artist.
This version of El Capitan is very similar to two other works that Munger did of the same subject, “El Capitan” and “El Capitan in a Gathering Storm”, in which he presents the mountain with the same pale white treatment. These works were later used by Yale University’s Geology department to teach its students, as they appear to have been the best depictions available of the rock formations.
